The Mississippi State Department of Health on Friday reported 281 new cases of COVID-19 in the state — including one new case in Hancock County — and eight new deaths elsewhere in the state.

“Thirty-seven of these new cases were among residents in long-term care facilities,” according to an MSDH statement released Friday morning. “The number of Mississippians currently hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 infection has risen to 401. Mississippi's total COVID-19 cases since March 11 now stands at 5,434, with 209 deaths.”

The total of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in Hancock County has now risen to 56, with a total of five deaths and seven people infected in long-term care facilities.

Harrison County saw five new cases, as of 6 p.m. on Thursday, bringing the total there to 157 with six deaths and one person infected in a long-term care facility.

In Pearl River County, two new cases and two new deaths were reported Friday morning, bringing the totals to 144 people with the virus, 13 dead, with 28 people in long-term care facilities infected.
