A Waveland man on Saturday allegedly fired shots into a house in Bayside Park that had six people inside, authorities said Monday.
Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam said Monday that Shawn Murphy, 27, of Waveland, was arrested and charged with DUI and shooting into a dwelling.
According to Adam, Deputy Izzy Neff was patrolling in the Bayside Park community about 10 p.m. Saturday evening.
Neff stopped a vehicle near Jasper and West Adams Streets after the driver, Murphy, allegedly ran a stop sign, Adam said.
During the traffic stop, Neff was notified by dispatch that a shooting had just taken place on West Forrest Street.
Murphy was arrested on suspicion of DUI and Neff and other deputies searched Murphy's vehicle, discovering a .38 caliber revolver, which had two spent shell casings inside, Adam said.
Investigators went to the home on West Forrest Street and discovered that one of the bullets entered the home through a garage door window and became embedded in the wooded frame around the air conditioning unit, Investigator Steve Saucier said Tuesday.
Murphy later gave a confession, saying he was angry because the homeowner had recently reported him to the Department of Human Services, Saucier said.
Murphy stated that he had gotten drunk and taken the pistol from a friend before traveling to Bayside, Saucier said.
He said he intended to shoot into the ground to "scare" the homeowner, Adam said.
Six people, including a child, were inside the home at the time of the shooting, Saucier said.
Nobody was injured during the incident and Murphy was later booked at the Hancock County Jail, where he was still incarcerated by press time Tuesday.
