The Screaming Porch Gift Co., an Old Town Bay St. Louis business, is in the midst of the national “American Made” competition sponsored by Martha Stewart Living.
The contest “spotlights the maker, supports the local, and celebrates the handmade,” according to Stewart’s website. “The program is made up of people and communities that have turned their passion for quality craftsmanship and well-designed goods into a way of life.”
Kelsey Rickenbaker-Bigelow, owner and creative director of the Screaming Porch, said this week she’s excited about the contest and hopes to help shine the national spotlight on Bay St. Louis.
“We live in Bay St. Louis for a very, very good reason,” she said, “because its probably one of the most ideal places to raise children and it's a very good place to run a mom & pop business.”
The Screaming Porch is located at 106 S. Second Street, specializes in unique, hand-crafted gift and novelty items. The building dates back to the mid-to-late 1800s, and was a former cobbler’s shop. Bigelow said she and her husband fell in love with the building the first time they saw it.
One of the Screaming Porch’s signature items, the “Mississippi Pickle Fork,” is currently featured on Stewart’s website.
Bigelow said the fork sort of started as a family heirloom: "My granddaddy was a real jokester. My family ran a barbecue restaurant.
“He bent a fork and would tease my grandmother's Sunday School class with it and tell them it was their diet fork."
