The Sea Coast Echo's readers have selected Linda "Ginny" Walden as our Hancock County Artist of the Month.
Walden is a native St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana, but moved to Hancock County in 1980, she said, "and made Mississippi my home."
Today, she and her husband Charles – retired from the U.S. Department of Defense – live in Bay St Louis. They have seven grown children and 15 grandchildren, ages 8-17.
Walden is a nurse by trade, with 27 years in the profession. Currently, she works at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport.
However, she said, "I have been an artist since 1994. I started water color and about five years ago, I started dabbling in some acrylic, and I actually prefer acrylic now. She paints on canvas, wood and glass, either with acrylic, water color or mixed medium.
Much of her work reflects her love of nature and her background in Louisiana and Mississippi, such as her paintings of pelicans and fishing camps.
"Growing up in St. Bernard, a low-lying area that encompassed sea life, it brings me back home being in Mississippi," she said. "I paint what's dear to my heart, and that's images of wildlife, sea-life, things that bring me joy."
On her Facebook page, Ginny recently quoted W. Somerset Maugham: "Every production of an artist should be the expression of an adventure of his soul."
That's the approach she takes to her art.
“My motto for artwork is ‘Done from the Heart,’” she said. “My painting gives me the freedom to put on canvas what I see in my mind and feel in my heart. I usually don't plan things in advance; I just let it happen.”
Walden has exhibited her work in several locations around the Gulf Coast, most recently at the Waveland City Hall Gallery and the Mockingbird Café in Bay St. Louis.
She currently has an exhibition on display at the Mockingbird, where various techniques were applied with paint.
Ginny can be reached at any of the following for original artwork or commissioned work: Cell, 985-237-9881 anytime or email: ginnysartworks@att.net. You can also find her at “Ginny’s Art Works” on Facebook, Etsy and Pinterest.
