The Bay St. Louis City Council on Tuesday resolved to name the marina inside the new municipal harbor in honor of the late Joseph "Jody" Compretta, Jr.
"We're just elated (Jody's) dream came true," Compretta's father, long-time state legislator J.P. Compretta, said Tuesday after the council's action. "One of his biggest dreams was to have this marina. ... I'm honored and extremely proud of it. It's a legacy his wife and children will be able to see and enjoy."
Jody Compretta died in 2008 in a tragic accident during the Endymion Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans.
After Hurricane Katrina, Jody was one of the founding members of the Bay Area Recovery Team (BART) which championed the cause of the Bay St. Louis Municipal Harbor and Marina.
According to the council's resolution, Compretta "had a vision to build a harbor in the downtown district as a catalyst for economic development ... and ... it was Jody Compretta who led the charge to secure resolutions of support from area organizations back in 2007."
The resolution also praised both J.P. and Jody for working with other business leaders and political officials to secure the funding for the project.
Hancock Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tish Williams said the Chamber will use funding through its Hancock Community Development Foundation to erect signs at the harbor before the grand opening.
The signs will be unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony.
