In order to better promote the arts, the Sea Coast Echo and The Arts, Hancock County, have partnered to offer our readers the Artist of the Week. We invite you to “vote” for your favorite artist each week by liking them on the Echo’s Facebook page. The artist with the most “likes” from Saturday-to-Saturday will then be our Artist of the Month, with a full feature story and multiple photos of his/her work. The first feature will run next week. The other artists this month will include Danny Noonan, P.O. Andersson, Bonnie Vallery and Ginny Walden.
Artist of the Week Joan Coleman lives in Bay St. Louis: “The life here is very quiet and serene,” she says. “After traveling all over the United States for my job, this place is wonderful.
“I have always strived to be creative, painting, sewing and jewelry making, and in the 1980s, I was a licensed regular at Jackson Square in New Orleans. I studied under local New Orleans artists in all painting media, took special classes with national artists such as Robert Woods and participated in the art associations in the New Orleans area. I received awards and ribbons from various shows including “Best of Show” from a juried show with the New Orleans Art Assoc.”
Coleman’s art was among works selected for permanent installation on the Bay St. Louis Bridge and is the second from the end on the Pass Christian side.
She is currently on the Board of Directors for The Arts, Hancock County, and the membership chairperson. She also serves on the board for CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, supporting efforts to provide advocates for our children in foster care.
