City leaders in Waveland met Thursday to discuss a new economic development strategy in the city
The city recently hired a economic development consultant and the purpose of Thursday's meeting was to develop a plan for future development.
"We hired a consultant, but we did not have any direction," Ward One Alderman Lili Stahler said Thursday. "We wanted to give him a plan."
Stahler said the board of aldermen has identified areas and ideas to spur future development.
The areas and ideas include Coleman Avenue, Highway 90, Kiln-Waveland Cutoff Road, and the possibility of a casino.
Stahler said zoning on Highway 90 and Kiln-Waveland Cutoff needs to be addressed because many areas are still classified as residential.
The city is also considering changing the name of Kiln-Waveland Cutoff to Waveland Avenue North, she said.
The consultant, former Vicksburg Mayor Lawrence Leynes, will begin formulating a development plan according to the areas of interest the city has designated, officials said. Stahler said the board has considered the idea of a future casino in the city limits, however, annexation of Lakeshore to the Silver Slipper has not been discussed.
