The Hancock County Planning and Zoning Commission recently granted a Kapalama Road business owner site approval to begin construction on a new retail shopping center.
The commission granted a conditional use to David Dreher, the owner of Gulf Coast Golf Carts.
Dreher said Monday that he plans to construct a facility with 10,000- to-12,000 square feet of commercial retail space.
Dreher's property is located at 17000 Kapalama Road, just north of the Diamondhead city limits. The new retail center will be constructed on land adjacent to Dreher's current business, he said.
"The best place for businesses to grow is in this area," Dreher said Monday. "We are looking at constructing a building with 10 units which will be about 900 square feet a piece."
Dreher said he hopes to attract restaurants, shops, and other light commercial businesses to his facility.
Nobody objected to Dreher's proposal at the planning and zoning commission, but the new retail center will not be officially approved until the board of supervisors approves the planning and zoning minutes later this month.
Dreher said he hopes to begin construction on the facility soon.
