It's official – U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo triumphed over former Rep. Gene Taylor in his bid to win the Republican nomination for his seat.
Although Palazzo apparently had more than 50 percent of the ballots cast in Tuesday's election, the race wasn't officially called until Wednesday because there were still outstanding ballots that might have put Taylor into runoff territory.
Taylor conceded to Palazzo on Wednesday.
"It has been an honor to serve South Mississippi as the Republican representative of the Fourth Congressional District," Palazzo said in a statement issued Wednesday. " I want to thank the countless volunteers and supporters who have stood beside me since 2010. Their support is what keeps me going in the fight against the runaway liberal agenda and the culture of corruption in Washington. I will continue working to ensure Mississippi values and voices are heard loud and clear in our nation's capitol."
Palazzo will now face Democratic nominee Matt Moore in the November general election.
