The 25th annual American Cancer Society Red Beans & Rice Cook-Off is scheduled Monday, April 21, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Bay St. Louis Community Hall, Blaize Avenue, next to the historic Depot. Once again,co-chairmen for the event will be Hancock County Tax Collector-Assessor Jimmie Ladner, Jr., and Ernie Zimmerman.
Ladner's administrative assistant, Sandra Hoda, handles the registration of cooking teams. She said there's still plenty of room for new teams.
Entry for a team is a donation of $100 to the American Cancer Society.
"We really want to have at least 25 cooking teams for our Silver Anniversary year," Ladner said. "The Red Beans & Rice Cook-Off benefits the American Cancer Society. Actually we would like to have about 30 teams."
There are five categories of competition: Business, restaurant, organizations. corporations and government. Red beans are provided for the cooking teams. Teams provide their own special seasonings and rice and also the cornmeal for their cornbread. There is a separate special trophy for the winning cornbread team.
Plates, spoons, etc, for the general public will be provided. Tickets will be available at the door for $6 a person, Ladner said. Attendance is very important, Ladner said.
There will be judges trophies in each category for first, second and third, and also Peoples Choice awards and a Best Decorated Booth trophy.
