Hancock County Sheriff's deputies on Monday arrested a Saucier woman whose one-year-old son nearly died last week after she allegedly placed the child in the bathtub, turned the water on, tied off the faucets, and left the child unattended, Hancock County Sheriff's Investigator Steve Saucier said Tuesday.
According to Saucier, deputies responded to a report of an injured child on Hanalei Circle in Diamondhead about 9:30 p.m. last Wednesday.
When deputies arrived, they learned that the child's mother, Brittany Trotter, 18, of Saucier had been staying at a residence across the street.
"Mrs. Trotter put the child in the bathtub and then left him unattended for an unknown amount of time," Saucier said. "When she came back into the bathroom, the bathtub was nearly full and the baby was lying face-down in the water."
Saucier said Trotter told police that she had tied-off the single-handle faucets because she did not want the child to turn them off and possibly be burned by hot water.
Trotter took the unresponsive child to neighbor Rocky Murphy's home, Saucier said.
"Mr. Murphy called 911 and began to try to resuscitate the child," Saucier said. "Mr. Murphy was able to get the child to begin throwing up water. Mr. Murphy is a hero. His quick thinking saved this child's life."
The child was taken to the hospital and later released to the custody of the Department of Human Services, Saucier said.
Investigators secured a warrant for Trotter's arrest and she was taken into custody on Monday, Saucier said.
Trotter was charged with felony child neglect. No bond had was set by press time Tuesday.
