Bay-Waveland Middle School cheerleaders hold up signs at a pep rally asking math teacher Joy Johnson to marry her colleague, Luke Weems.
Hey teacher, I think I wanna marry you – Joy Johnson, a math teacher at Bay-Waveland Middle School, got the surprise of a lifetime on Friday when boyfriend, physical education teacher Luke Weems proposed marriage in front of the entire student body at a pep rally.
"At this pep rally, we recognize the winter sports athletes and teachers of the month," Principal Cherie Labat said. "Before the holidays, Mr. Weems approached me with the idea.
"I'm so happy for the both of them. This is such a positive and good thing to show the kids."
During the rally, Labat recognized the teachers and pretended to overlook Johnson, who was November's teacher of the month.
When Labat called Johnson to the stage, six students appeared holding signs saying "Will you marry me, Joy?"
Weems appeared on stage and got down on one knee and presented the ring to Johnson.
"I was so surprised," Johnson said. "I thought he was out of town.
"When I saw the signs, it didn't process at first."
"She is an awesome and great person," Weems said. "This has been a process. Her sister helped me pick out the ring."
The lovebirds met at the school and dated for a year.
"He's just perfect," Johnson said. "I love him.”
