With the high school basketball season winding down, teams are jockeying for position in the final standings of the division races. The final standings of the division races will lead to seedings for the respective division tournaments through the state of Mississippi.
The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws defeated the Bay High Tigers in a cross-town division tilt which helped the Rocks complete the regular season sweep of Bay High on the hardwood.
In the early goings of the game, the two squads matched each other well. SSC held a slim 9-7 advantage at the end of the first period. The Rocks pushed slightly further ahead by halftime with a 21-16 lead.
The third period was disastrous for the Tigers as they only managed four points while SSC surged ahead for a 32-20 lead heading into the final period.
SSC head coach Ricky Stone commented, “Anytime you are able to defeat a rival, it is a huge win. This was a tight game in the first half. The kids know each other so well. But, in the second half, I thought we were able to settle down somewhat and we played well from that point. I was proud of our team for the effort they put forth. They played hard and physical. We were able to defend Kelton Piernas well.”
The Rocks were led by Mitchell Walk who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. He also had four blocks. Colton Johnson tallied 10 points all in the second half.
Piernas led the Tigers with 20 points.
Bay High head coach Randy McCrory stated, “We had a tough third period. Our timing on our shots was not where it needed to be. We were able to do some things in the fourth period. We had cut it to six in that period but Colton Johnson hit a huge three-pointer for them.”
In other local action, the Hancock Lady Hawks defeated Hattiesburg 67-60 to improve to 19-3 overall and 2-3 in the division.
The Lady Hawks were led by Destiny Marks with 18 points followed by Alissa Adam with 17. Tiffany Eakins and Leigh Beaver each added 14 points in the win.
