At least 47 vehicles were involved in a series of crashes Friday at the Mississippi/Louisiana state line on Interstate 10, officials said Friday.
West Hancock Fire Department Chief Kim Jones said the crashes began about 6:30 Friday.
Some of the crashes occurred in Mississippi and others in Louisiana, officials said.
Jones said a total of 47 vehciles were involved. There was at least one serious injury and other minor injuries, but no fatatilites, Jones said.
Witnesses said via social media that icy conditions on the bridge caused several vehicle to run into each other and then a chain reaction of crashes occurred.
The crashes shut down I-10 near the state line for several hours. One lane of traffic is currently open and other vehicles have been diverted to Highway 90 at Highway 607.
Jones said several local fire departments are assisting West Hancock including, Bayside, Clermont Harbor, and St. Tammany.
Jones said his department also worked a three-car accident on Highway 90 just inside of Louisiana that had injuries, but he did not have any further details.
The Echo will provide more details on the crashes when it becomes available.
