The Bay-Waveland School District's Board of Trustees on Monday honored the memory of Bay St. Louis icon James "Jim" McDonald.
McDonald passed away in November 2013.
He was a lifelong resident of Bay St. Louis, veteran of the United States Air Force and owner of the family business, building supply company W.A. McDonald and Sons.
School Board President Dr. Sherry Ponder described McDonald as "personable" and awarded the family's annual scholarships for graduating seniors at Bay High School.
Brothers David, C.C., Fred and Jim McDonald founded the Katrina Overall McDonald Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor their mother.
"He always wanted to meet with the young people," Ponder said "He would take a photograph with them and maintained relationships with the winners. He is going to to be greatly missed."
The board approved a resolution proclaiming McDonald a faithful community leader and supporter of the Bay-Waveland School District and that his passing has left the school district "deeply saddened."
"This is just wonderful," Winifred McDonald, Jim's widow said Monday. "I accept this on behalf of all the McDonald boys and family.
"We've given about 130 scholarships so far, we hope for 130 more. We were blessed and, what do you do when you're blessed? You pass it on."
