Construction of a hotel at the Silver Slipper Casino property in Lakeshore will begin this week and casino officials said Tuesday they are hopeful the facility will be open by the end of the year.
In September, the Silver Slipper announced plans for a new 140-room hotel located in the south parking lot of the property.
Silver Slipper Chief Executive Officer John Ferrucci said Tuesday that before construction could begin, the parking lot had to be demolished and some underground work needed to be completed.
"We are just about ready to start putting some pilings down," Ferrucci said. "It may not look like much today, but people will start seeing progress very soon."
The $17 million hotel will be the first development to take advantage of Hancock County C-4 zoning in the Lakeshore area.
Prior to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Hancock County Board of Supervisors changed the zoning in the area to allow commercial resort developments on the beach-front in Lakeshore.
After a lengthy legal battle which went all the way to the state supreme court, the zoning finally went into effect in 2008. Ferrucci said the hotel will attract more people to the casino, which will help the local economy.
The hotel will also employ several dozen additional employees, officials said.
