WaveFest 2013 is set for this Saturday, Nov. 2, after being postponed by hurricane warnings when Tropical Storm Karen blew through in early October.
David “Cool Breeze” Mayley will be this year's emcee, replacing honorary Key West “Mayor Gonzo” Sammy Mays.
“The festival features the ‘Sounds Of The Northern Caribbean’ on the Silver Slipper Casino Stage overlooking the calm waters of the Mississippi Sound,” event organizer Charlie Cornelius said. “Regional Trop Rock, Buffettesque, Beach Pop, Reggae and steel pan drums will keep our coconut telegraph line buzzing until the newest, most original sound coming out of New Orleans takes the stage to close out the day.
"I am a Brass-A-Holic!" That declaration will kick off a brand new sound that has taken over the New Orleans funky groove scene. The Brass-A-Holics and their ‘Go-Go Brass Funk’ genre have joined the ranks of the time-honored traditions, culture and music that have wafted out of The Big Easy.
“You won't want to miss this experience that will headline the day from 7-9 p.m. ... we're going out with a ‘Big Bang!’”
Kicking off the sounds of WaveFest '13 will be Hattiesburg's "Lost Shakers Of Salt" and their gentle sounds of the tropics between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
They will be followed by "Jinny Buffett & The Poor Ole Reefer Band" between 3-5 p.m.
Throw on that pirate garb and join in the fun of this year's Annual WaveFest Pirate Costume Contest sponsored by the Hollywood Casino. Strut your stuff in front of the U.S.S. Nereids at 5 p.m. to win cash prizes for your efforts.
Mayley and Waveland Mayor David Garcia will announce the winners from the stage at 6 p.m.
The judges –Pirate Queens and their Buccaneer King – are local carnival royalty, including Kelyn Breland, Dina Rosetti, Beth Gruzinskas and Tim Meyer. Registration will be at the WCC tent between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to participate.
Winners will be selected from three categories: Individual ($100), Couple ($200) and Group ($300).
