Bay High needed a block of a Vancleave 35-yard field goal attempt with10 seconds remaining in Bay St. Louis last night, and they got it. Keishaun Pullom made the play, breaking around the right side to secure the 22-20 district win for the Tigers.
"It's a set thing we do," said Tigers coach Jeff Hopgood. "Keishaun Pullom is probably one of the best I've coached at doing it. We work on it tirelessly every week. Chris McKee sets up the block and Keishaun goes and get it.
"I am so proud of these kids," Hopgood added. "They don't give up. They've got a lot of fight in them."
The Tigers trailed 20-16 when their defense made a huge stop as Vancleave attempted to go for it on fourth down. Skylar Bush got in the Bulldogs' backfield and got the sack for the Tigers, giving them a first down at their own 31 yardline.
The Tigers' offense followed with a huge play of their own on first down, a 28-yard pass play from Bennett Favre to Patrick Daniels to the Vancleave 41 yardline. Larnelle Lewis picked up 12 yards on the next two plays with carries of 7 and 5 yards. Then Tristan Hopgood broke through the line of scrimmage for 18 yards to the Vancleave 13 yardline. On third down, Favre on play action dropped back and connected with Austin Wilkinson in the end zone for the go-ahead score. The PAT kick was blocked, but the Tigers led 22-20 with 3:56 on the game clock.
Favre 's touchdown pass to Wilkinson was his third scoring pass on the night. The Tigers first score of the night was a 52-yard pass from Favre to Daniels in the first quarter on the Tigers' second possession. The Tigers led 6-0 with 1:37 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT went wide left.
Vancleave tied the game on a 17-yard pass play on their ensuing drive, and they also missed their PAT kick. Vancleave increased their first half lead to 13-6 on a 24-yard quarterback keeper.
Patrick Ponder kicked a 31-yard field goal to close out the first half scoring with the Tigers trailing at 13-9 with 58 seconds remaining before halftime.
The Tigers' held the Bulldogs to 4 snaps and a punt on the visitors' first possession of the second half, but the Tigers' offense did just the opposite, putting together a 13-play drive that included first down runs of 12 yards and 21 yards by Lewis and two fourth down conversions. Set up for a punt, fullback Nick Proulx handled the snap and broke through the line of scrimmage for 12 yards to the Vancleave 44 yardline. Four plays later it was Proulx again on a 3-yard carry to the 32 yardline.
Favre capped the drive with his second touchdown pass of the night, a 14-yard toss to Daniels. The Tigers led 16-13 after Ponder's PAT kick.
The Bulldogs got their final lead of the night with 6 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a 7-yard run to go up 20-16.
On the night Favre completed 5 of 7 passes for 108 yards and 3 touchdowns. Lewis led all rushers with 96 yards on 19 carries.
Defensively, Proulx led with 15 tackles followed by Wilkinson and Hopgood with 10 each.
