Officers of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office have investigated reports of “squatters” living in South Hancock Elemeentary School.
The Hancock County Sheriff's Office is investigating recent reports of a "squatter" possible living inside South Hancock Elementary.
Sheriff Ricky Adam said Thursday that his office has received several complaints of an unknown man being spotted in the school after hours.
Adam said there has been no verification of an unauthorized person inside the school after hours.
"We have searched the building several times and found no evidence of anyone staying there," Adam said. "We are continuing to monitor the situation and provide regular patrols and walk-throughs."
Hancock County Schools Superintendent Alan Dedeaux said Thursday that the school requested the sheriff's office's involvement because of the reports.
"Some of the night cleaning workers have said someone is in the building," Dedeaux said. "There have been no sightings so far.
“We have searched everywhere, even in the attics and terrace areas.
We are doing everything we can to investigate this, but so far, there has been nothing."
Dedeaux said safety is the top priority at any school.
"There are a lot of rumors and mis-information out there right now," he said. "The safety of our children and staff is the most important thing. If we do find someone trespassing, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
