Start your engines! The Big Easy in the Bay, a New Orleans-style car party, is coming to Bay St. Louis as part of Cruisin' the Coast for the second year in a row.
The party will roll on Thursday, October 10, from 5 to 10 p.m., in the historic Depot District. The evening will feature live New Orleans music, jambalaya and other regional foods, a one-of-a-kind car contest, raffle and draw-down, as well as surprise entertainment. Admission to the event is free, and proceeds from food sales and contests will benefit Bay-Waveland Habitat for Humanity.
"Bay St. Louis is the Little Easy,” said Wendy McDonald, the Bay-Waveland Habitat executive director. “We're so close to New Orleans that we can't help but have that influence. We're a laid back, fun town, and cruisers love coming to the Bay for a big night in the little easy."
The music starts at 5 p.m. with Benny Grunch and the Bunch. The Rochelle Harper Band will play later in the evening. Interspersed will be a couple of guest performers offering parodies of well-known regional entertainment acts. “I'm not saying who will be there. You'll just have to come see that for yourself,” said McDonald.
The Big Easy in the Bay car contest, sponsored by BLD Services, is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will offer original trophies created by artist Marie Lamb awarded for unique competition categories, including Best Make-out Car. The entry fee is $10.
The Drawdown will also take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The prize is $1,250 and tickets are $20 each (300 to be sold). Raffle tickets are $2 with great prizes to choose from.
The Bay-Waveland Habitat for Humanity has helped more than 200 families move into homes since it began shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005.
Last year's Big Easy in the Bay raised over $10,000, according to McDonald, and the funds were used to improve energy efficiency and make critical home repairs to existing homes.
“We're grateful for your support and hope you will come out and enjoy a good time for a good cause in the “Little Easy,” added McDonald. For more information, visit HabitatBW.org or call (228) 467-9699.
