Tropical Storm Karen is moving toward the north-northwest at around 10 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricance Center. That means the center of the storm is now forecast to pass directly over Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday, although local emergency officials feel the biggest threat will be storm surge in the low-lying areas.
Karen currently has maximum sustained winds near 60 miles per hour with higher gusts, according to the NHC, with little change in strength expected today and tonight. Some strengthening is possible Saturday and Saturday night, with a slowing in forward speed.
On Sunday, a cold front is expected to move Karen farther to the east.
