East Hancock Elementary and DeLisle Elementary have been named exemplary high performing schools by the U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon Schools Program.
"We are very, very excited," East Hancock's Principal Tara Ladner said. "We are so proud to be one of the four schools chosen.
"This is a first for the school district."
The MS Department of Education's website said the program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students' academic achievement.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools are honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Each school receives a plaque and flag.
"East Hancock consistently strives for excellence," Hancock County School District Superintendent Alan Dedeaux said. "I'm grateful that their efforts are being acknowledged with this high honor.
"I know our community is very proud of this recognition."
"We are elated and jubilant," Ladner said. "Today we will host a pep rally in the school gym at 1 p.m. to honor our students.
"This didn't happen without lots of teamwork, hard working and dedicated teachers, students' hard work and the support of the parents and community."
"This is an incredible honor to be best in class," Pass Christian Superintendent Beth John said. "We had a wonderful celebration Tuesday morning and surprised our teachers and students.
"We are incredibly blessed with strong teachers and administration that pour that heart and soul into helping our students succeed."
