The Pass Christian Pirates and the St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws each got wins on Friday night while the Bay High Tigers and the Hancock Hawks stumbled on the gridiron.
The Pirates and the Rocks each got into the win column early in the 2013 season as compared to last year when the squads combined for a 1-17 record.
The Tigers, who advanced to the third round of the Class 4A state playoffs last year, ran into a buzz-saw in the Biloxi Indians and fell 58-0.
The Hancock Hawks struggled with penalties and early turnovers in their 35-13 loss to the Rocks.
The Pirates (1-0) shutout the McLaurin Tigers 28-0 last Friday night behind a stellar rushing game that produced 397 yards on the night.
Prescott Williams rushed for 139 yards on 10 carries and a score. Devin Swanier rushed for two more scores. Tyler Ladner scored the other touchdown for the Pirates. Blake Keel added a two-point conversion.
The Pirates will be back at home on Friday night against Perry Central. The Bulldogs lost last week to Richton 22-18.
The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws (1-0) defeated the Hancock Hawks 35-13 and won for the first time since October 14, 2011, when they defeated the Poplarville Hornets 33-26. The Rocks had gone 12 games without a win until Friday night.
The Rocks and Hawks were tied 7-7 midway through the first period before a string of penalties and an interception led to 21 straight points by the Rocks.
The Hawks rebounded last in the second period to score again but the Rocks’ lead was too much.
SSC quarterback Tyler Allen threw for 288 yards on 24-of-41 passing with four touchdowns and a pick. He also added 118 yards on nine carries to account for 406 yards of total offense.
Chase Rhodes caught 11 passes for 117 yards and two scores (40, 9) and Brennen Bradley added eight catches for 114 yards and a score (14).
Patrick McRaney caught the other touchdown pass. Brandon Berry added 106 yards on 11 carries. Joe Guillot added a rushing touchdown for the Rocks.
The Hawks were led by quarterback Chase Fagan who rushed 10 times for 231 yards and a score. He had runs of 61 and 75 yards on the night with the former being a touchdown.
Shane Ladner added the other score for Hancock on a five-yard run. Ladner had 13 carries for 62 yards.
On defense, the Rocks were led by Guillot who tallied 14 tackles including a sack. Zach Ladner added 12 tackles and a sack while Luke Logan had nine stops, two and one-half sacks and a fumble recovery. Mitchell Walk also added nine stops and a sack.
For the Hawks, Geb Fricke, Alex Feazelle and Austin Whavers were credited with six tackles each.
The Hawks enjoy an open week this Friday night while the Rocks travel to Long Beach. The Bearcats were open last week.
The Bay High Tigers traveled to Milner Stadium on Friday afternoon to play in the first of two Shrimp Bowl games against the Biloxi Indians.
The Tigers got off to a rough start dropping the contest 58-0.
One of the Tigers’ bigger plays of the afternoon was a 42-yard pass from Bennett Favre to Pierre Collins that brought the ball down to the Indians’ five yardline. The drive ended with an interception.
The Tigers feature a young squad this year after posting a 10-2 record last year and advancing to the Class 4A third round of the playoffs.
The Tigers travel to Purvis this Friday night to take on the Tornadoes who defeated North Forrest last week 27-14.
