Former Hancock High School Lady Hawks basketball coach Leslie Danielle DeWitt was stabbed during an apparent armed robbery on Friday afternoon.
Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam said Friday that his office received a report of an armed robbery about 4 p.m. Friday.
Adam said DeWitt was at a home on Caesar Necaise Road when an unknown assailant entered the home and attempted to rob her.
The man then allegedly stabbed DeWitt in the leg, Adam said.
DeWitt was able to get away and drove to a relative's home to call police, Chief Investigator Glen Grannan said Friday.
She was transported to the hospital and underwent surgery, friends of the family said. No update on her condition was available by press time Friday.
Earlier this year, DeWitt, 31, was arrested in both Hancock and Pearl River counties for alleged sexual misconduct with a minor.
Adam said he does not believe Friday's incident is related to DeWitt's pending charges.
The assailant, who is still at large, was wearing an all-black outfit, Adam said.
Adam said anyone with information about the case can call central dispatch at 228-255-9191.
