SSC/OLA claim Class 4A state runner-up in tennis

The tennis courts were finally alive with lots of ‘racket’ earlier this week in the Jackson and Ridgeland area for the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s team and individual tennis state championships. Inclement weather for the past few weeks forced the postponement of the state tournaments to this week.
The SSC/OLA team advanced to the Class 4A state tennis team finals on Monday, May 13th. The Rocks lost 5-2 to New Albany who claimed their second consecutive Class 4A state title.
The Rocks’ only points in the finals came in boys’ singles as Walker Laseter won his match and the mixed doubles team of Tory Galvin and Emily McGinity also won.
The team advanced to the finals by defeating West Lauderdale in first round action, Germantown in second round play and Newton County for the Class 4A South State title.
In the individual state tournament which began following the team finals on Monday, Laseter of St. Stanislaus was crowned the Class 4A state champion in boys’ singles.
Laseter defeated Cole Thomas of Cleveland (6-0, 6-1), Mark Robbins of New Albany (6-4, 6-1), Keith Holmes of Greenwood (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Joseph Schindler of Lewisburg in the state finals (6-2, 6-7, 6-4).
In Class 4A girls’ singles, Bella Gonzalez of Bay High dropped her first round match.
In Class 4A boys’ doubles, James Luffey/Austin Walk of SSC won their first round match over the team from Florence 6-1, 6-0 but dropped their second round match to the squad from New Albany 4-6, 3-6.
In Class 4A girls’ doubles, Holley/Taylor of OLA defeated Purvis 6-4, 6-2 but fell in the second round to New Albany 3-6, 1-6.
Also on Class 4A doubles, Clearman and Stringer of Bay High defeated the team from Cleveland 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 and 8-6 but dropped their second round match to the team from Newton County 4-6, 0-6.
In Class 4A mixed doubles, Galvin/McGinity of SSC/OLA defeated Lawrence County 6-0, 6-1 in first round action and Kosciusko 6-4, 6-5 in second round play. They downed Shannon 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the Class 4A finals against West Lauderdale. They dropped the finals match 4-6, 1-6.
In Class 6A boys’ singles, Elliott Nolan of Hancock lost to Chandler Duke of Clinton 7-5, 3-6, 3-6 in first round action while Sophie Beddoe of Hancock lost in girls’ singles to Murrah’s Ruby Drake 5-7, 5-7 in first round play. The mixed doubles team of Mehaffey/Robinson lost to 1-6, 0-6 to Northwest Rankin in first round play.
In Class 3A, the Pass Christian Pirates defeated Forest High School in first round team action and Philadelphia in second round play. The Pirates dropped their match against St. Andrews in the Class 3A South State finals. St. Andrews went on to win the Class 3A team title.
In Class 3A boys’ singles, Colton O’Neal lost to South Pontotoc’s Hunter Fooshee in first round action.
In Class 3A girls’ singles, Sydney Labat defeated Millie Coggin of Nettleton 6-1, 6-0 but dropped her second round match to Peryn Reeves-Darby of St. Andrews 0-6, 0-6.
In Class 3A boys’ doubles, Newton/Robinson defeated Mooreville 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in first round play but fell in the second round to South Pontotoc5-7, 6-3, 5-7.
In Class 3A mixed doubles, Vo/Feeney defeated Cleveland-East Side 6-0, 6-0 but dropped their second round match to Raleigh 2-6, 2-6.
