Miss Mississippi visits INFINITY Center

Students from Little Oak Middle School’s Science Club (Slidell, La.) and Biloxi’s Cub Scout troop 213 met Miss Mississippi at INFINITY Science Center Thursday afternoon and heard some inspiring words about her hard work to obtain an education in Science.
Miss Mississippi 2013, Paromita Mitra, is seeking a degree in Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Mathematics.
Growing up in Bangledesh with her family, educational opportunities were a bit different, Mitra said. In her home country, children do not get books to take home, and most of her homework was completed in a straw hut, she said, but her father chose to educate himself and pursue a career in medicine as a doctor, giving him the ability to immigrate Mitra and her family to America, where they became citizens.
As a child attending school in Mississippi, Mitra said, she participated in all the typical things young girls do, such cheerleading, band and choir; but it was her brother whohelped feed her interest in science by getting her to look through telescopes and explaining how the solar system and universe work, she said at Thursday’s event.
Once her interest was piqued, she decided she would seek a degree in the science field. It was a comment made by her teacher that pushed to her work harder towards that goal, she said. Mitra said the teacher laughed after hearing of her aspirations, pointing out that Mitra had not taken a single Calculus course.
“You should never let what someone tells you bring you down,” Mitra told the students.
Even though the teacher’s comment was not supportive, Mitra did not give up.
“It actually lit a fire, I’m glad she did that,” Mitra said.
Mitra told the students that education is one of the things no one can take away from them, and encouraged them to continue theirs.
