The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) on Saturday released six rehabilitated sea turtles back into the ocean at the beach just west of Pass Christian Harbor. IMMS President Dr. Moby Solangi said the rehabbed animals included five juvenile Kemp’s ridley sea turtles and one juvenile green sea turtle, all of which were rescued in 2012 and treated for serious injuries. One of the turtles, named “Chipper” in honor of Pass Christian Mayor Leo “Chipper” McDermott, was fitted with a special transmitter which will relay data about its journey and surroundings back to the IMMS. Father Louis Lohan blessed the turtles before volunteers carried them into the water. The public can monitor Chipper’s journey by visiting www.imms.org.
