A Waveland man on Monday allegedly shot himself at a Waveland motel and the man's one-year-old son was also wounded during the incident, authorities said Tuesday.
According to a press release from the Waveland Police Department, Khiry Thomas, 22, was found dead of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound to the head about 8:30 p.m. Monday.
Thomas' one-year-old son was also found alive in the hotel with a wound to the head.
The child survived and was taken to Children's Hospital in New Orleans and is expected to survive, Waveland Detective David Allen said.
Allen said police are trying to determine if Thomas shot the child or if the child was struck by a bullet fragment or ricochet.
"We are awaiting results from the hospital to conclusively say what happened to the child," Allen said. "Right now, it's too early to say."
Officers recovered a handgun, but he declined to say home many shots had been fired.
Hancock County Coroner Jim Faulk said Tuesday that an autopsy on Thomas was performed on Tuesday by forensic pathologist Dr. Paul McGarry, but the complete results may not be available for a couple of days.
"We are collecting and corroborating evidence, speaking to witnesses, and creating a timeline of events," Allen said.
Allen said anyone who may have any information about Thomas or the events which led to the shooting can call the Waveland Police Department or central dispatch at 228-255-9191.
