Gov. Phil Bryant on Thursday issued an Amended Writ of Election to fill the vacancy in District 95 of the Mississippi House of Representatives resulting from the recent death of Rep. Jessica Upshaw.
The qualifying deadline is set for April 29 and the legislative election will be held on May 28.
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast, then a runoff will be June 18.
The vacant position covers three precincts in Hancock County: All of Diamonhead East and West; a small portion of Dedeaux; and one street in Crane Creek.
Some parts of Harrison County are also covered.
As of press time Friday no candidates had qualified, according to the Secretary of State's office.
Upshaw, of Diamondhead, served in the Legislature since 2004, when she was first elected as the District 95 representative.
Authorities say she died on March 24 of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident is still under investigation by the MBI.
