Christa Reed, a guard/forward for the Class 4A state champion Bay High Lady Tigers, has been selected as the Gatorade Player of the Year for Mississippi in girls’ basketball.
The 5’11” junior led South Mississippi in scoring with 24 points per game along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals and was also recently named Class 4A girls’ offensive player of the year.
Reed becomes just the third girls’ player from the Mississippi Gulf Coast to earn the honor following Tiffany Travis of Harrison Central in 1996 and Dedra Magee of Picayune in 2006.
She has been a starter for the Lady Tigers and head coach Debbie Triplett since the eighth grade and led the Lady Tigers to an undefeated record of 36-0 this year. It is the first time since Harrison Central in 1988 that a girls’ team went undefeated on the season.
In a previous interview, Reed commented, “Being the first undefeated team at Bay High is something very special that will stay with all of us. We know what other teams before us had accomplished and we just wanted to play our game and leave our own mark.”
Triplett has called Reed the “…glue that holds the team together…” and coached her three older sisters – Stephanie, Kendra and Tamara. All three won state titles playing for Bay High and went on to play college basketball.
Reed will return to Bay High with two starting teammates – Jamaya Galloway and Breanna Smith – next season.
Reed is being hotly pursued by several Division I schools including Southern Mississippi, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Michigan, Vanderbilt, LSU and USA. Reed has met the academic qualifications for NCAA eligibility with a 4.12 GPA.
