Bay St. Louis Babe Ruth Baseball will host the 2013 Southwest Region Cal Ripken Baseball Tournament for the eight-year-old age group.
The event will be from July 19 through July 23 at the Bay St. Louis Sports Complex.
There will be 25 teams from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas at the event.
Ray Cox, president of Bay St. Louis Babe Ruth Baseball, expects that the tournament will bring approximately 1,500 people to the city and surrounding areas, he said Friday.
“This is the first time that we will host the eight-year-olds,” he said. “We have been working on this for four years now.
“We want the people of Bay St. Louis to come watch good quality baseball,” he said, “these guys have fun.”
Cox believes that the restaurants and retail stores in the area will thrive with the influx of baseball players and their families for the event, he said.
In 2007, the Cal Ripken Babe Ruth Baseball League in Bay St. Louis hosted the regional tournament for the 11-year-old age group.
"Bay St. Louis did a real good job and we appreciated it," Babe Ruth Southwestern Commissioner Joe Featherston of Arkansas said Friday. "We wanted to come back."
