The Charles B. Murphy Pearlington Public Library re-opened in its original building Friday.
Damaged by Hurricane Isaac on Aug. 29, 2012, the library was forced to temporarily re-locate to the nearby Pearlington Gymnasium.
With the help of the community and the Hancock County Library System, the library is now fully functional.
Multiple community residents showed up to celebrate the re-opening; of them, Martha Frost, 68 of Pearlington, teary-eyed, said, “It’s so important to the community. It’s central for the children and everyone else. I use the library all the time and I can’t tell you how happy I am to see it open again.”
Hancock Library Foundation Member Bill Leblanc, 69 of Bay Saint Louis, was proud to be present at the grand re-opening, “It’s been a long time coming. Getting a project like this done takes teamwork,” he said.
Adorned with local artwork, the newly-renovated library houses thousands of books and more than 300 movies on DVD.
The library has eight public access computers and offers free wireless internet.
Separated from the main room is an area designated as the children’s library, which has two early literary computers for elementary-age children that are loaded with hundreds of academic activities and games.
Within the children’s library are four computers that are designated for teenagers.
There is also something to offer to those reading on electronic devices; with an e-reader library card, readers have access to rent digital copies of books for two weeks at a time.
The library will host a movie night once a month, family-friendly films served with popcorn will show at 5 p.m..
The first showing is Thursday, Feb. 21.
Preschool story hours will be held on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m..
Also occurring monthly are Wii tournaments, where gamers can compete against each other and earn bragging rights.
The Pearlington Public Library hours are: Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m..
