The fences are down and nothing is stopping people from parking in the Bay Saint Louis Municipal Parking Garage on Court Street, Mayor Les Fillingame said yesterday.
The parking garage will provide more than 120 parking spaces to the public in the downtown area.
According to the city's Director of Economic and Community Development Buz Olsen, the garage is complete, except for a few "punch-list items that consist of damage that occurred during construction of the civic center."
"Before the garage can be used we want those items fixed," Olsen said.
An employee of Flagstar Construction, working in the parking garage on Tuesday, said that "the punch-list will be done by next week."
"I drove through yesterday and noticed that the height bar had been installed," Olsen said Tuesday.
Flagstar, on Tuesday, sent an email stating that the ramp and upstairs parking deck is available for use, Olsen later said.
Fillingame said Tuesday that he had not yet been notified that the parking garage has been "officially" released to the city, but "people can park there," he said.
The parking garage is expected to help with the influx of parking issues in the downtown area.
Fillingame said the city went in to the project with the concept to have government and city employees park in the garage so that customers of downtown businesses can use the convenient, street parking.
"I think employees of the Hancock County Court House and Hancock County Youth Court will get the most use of the parking garage," Fillingame said.
The court house currently has 22 regular parking spaces and two handicap spaces, in addition to five reserved spaces.
The construction of the civic center atop the parking garage is not yet completed.
"We are shooting for a March completion date," Lisa Cowand, president of the Hancock County Board of Supervisors said Tuesday.
