Tigers & Pass Christian clinch division titles, Rocks earn #2-seed

The regular season for high school soccer came to a close last night with several area teams eager to begin their postseason play on Jan. 22. There will be as many as six area teams competing in the soccer state playoffs that begin Tuesday evening. The area has claimed 16 state titles in soccer since it became a sanctioned MHSAA state championship sport in 1988.
OLA has won 10 state titles and played has played in every state championship final since 2000. The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws won state titles in 1996-97, 2003-04 and 2010 and has played in nine state finals. The Bay High Tigers are the defending Class 4A boys’ state champion and the Lady Tigers of Bay High have played in two state finals.
The Bay High Tigers wrapped up the Division 8-4A soccer titles for both the boys and girls this past week while the Pass Christian Pirates dethroned St. Patrick and claimed the Division 8-3A boys’ title. The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws returned to the Class 4A state playoffs as the #2-seed behind the Tigers in Division 8. The OLA Crescents are in line to claim at least a share of the Division 8-3A girls’ title but final standings were not decided until last night’s games which we completed after press time.
The Tigers (16-1-2, 5-0-0) defeated the Poplarville Hornets 3-1 on Tuesday evening at Joe D. McCullouch Stadium/Tank Williams Field. Michael Stringer, Aubrey Pohl and Colby Krost all scored for the Tigers in the win.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers (7-9-1, 4-0) defeated the Lady Hornets 3-2. Hailey Furlan scored two goals and Merritt Baria added one in the win.
The Tigers are set to host Newton County in the boys’ game on Tuesday, January 22nd while the Lady Tigers will host Northeast Lauderdale prior to the boys’ game.
The Pass Christian Pirates (16-2-3, 3-0) shutout St. Patrick 2-0 as Casey Robinson and Blake Newton both scored for the Pirates. The win gave the Pirates the Division 8-3A title and dethroned St. Patrick who had won 18 consecutive division titles with several coming when they were known as Mercy Cross High School. Kendall Walker recorded the shutout in goal.
The Lady Pirates defeated St. Patrick to complete the sweep on Tuesday evening. Devin McGee, Shannon Swilley and Emma Holland all scored for the Lady Pirates.
Opponents for the two Pirate soccer teams in the state playoffs have not yet been determined.
The Crescents of OLA (8-4-2, 4-1) defeated Resurrection 5-1 on Tuesday. Tiffany Jones scored twice while Abby Gollott, Maggie Kowalski and Shelby McConnell all scored once.
The opponent for OLA’s first round playoff opponent had not been decided at press time.
The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws shutout Vancleave on Tuesday evening 4-0. Evan Lundgren, Austin Miller, Johnny Longo and Mason Favre all scored one goal in the win. Trey Asher preserved the shutout in goal. The Rocks will travel to West Lauderdale for their first round state playoff soccer game next Tuesday.
