The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws hosted the Picayune Maroon Tide on Friday night. The game did not start in the Rocks’ favor as they fell behind 16-4 before they closed to 16-12 at the end of the first period.
The Rocks stayed with the Tide in the second period and went into intermission down 27-26.
Again, in the third period the two teams battled basket-for-basket with the Tide holding a slim 38-36 heading into the final stanza.
The Rocks caught fire in the fourth period and built a 54-43 lead with 2:06 left to play only to see the Tide storm back. SSC held on for a 54-52 win.
SSC head coach Ricky Stone commented, “Picayune has a tremendous team and they jumped out on us in the first period. We battled back to get within a basket. We played well to start the fourth period. We executed much better in the second half than in the first half. This was a big win for us and now we need to work on keeping the momentum going.”
The Rocks (8-12) were led by Drake Davis with 17 points followed by Jerrod Rigby with 14 and Gatlin Fay with 10.
The Bay High Lady Tigers improved to 22-0 with a 51-45 victory over H W Byars. Christa Reed led Bay High with 19 points followed by Bretta Hart with 14 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Terrica Williams had 11 points.
