Ponder named to academic all-district list

The UCA Bears completed regular season play with a 10-1 overall record and were 9-0 in conference play and ranked number three nationally.
Three University of Central Arkansas football players earned 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District honors on Thursday.
The three Bears include senior punter Patrick Ponder, senior linebacker James Graves and junior offensive lineman John Cook.
Ponder has a 3.68 grade-point average in anthropology. Graves has a 3.62 GPA in computer science. Cook has a 3.78 GPA in biology.
Ponder, from Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Jones County Junior College, is currently third in the Southland Conference in punting with a 40.5-yard average. He was a preseason All-SLC selection.
Graves, from Bassfield, Miss., and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, is UCA’s third-leading tackler with 54 total tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss.
Cook, from Grenada (Miss.) High School, is part of a UCA offense that ranks second in the SLC in total offense, rushing offense, passing offense and scoring offense. Cook was a preseason All-SLC selection and was an SLC All-Academic honoree last season.
