The St. Martin Yellow Jackets outlasted the St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws on Friday night in Jackson County 9-7 and missed opportunities defined the loss.
SSC head coach Jeff Jordan commented, "Dropped balls, backs not hitting the holes hard enough, missed blocks, and errant throws caused us efficiency problems on offense all game. Our defense played well enough to win. Our special teams played with one exception. Our execution on offense just wasn't there. You want to win every game but this loss does not hurt our mission but it does hurt our gut. We had our chances to win and we should have."
The Rock defense stepped up on the opening possession of the game and forced a punt.
SSC started with a 27-yard pass from Jake Greer to Thomas Williams. Five plays later, Greer went to Harrison Brewer for a gain of 20 yards. The Rocks got down to the St. Martin eight yard line but turned the ball over on downs.
The Yellow Jackets (3-1) put together a 14-play drive that drove down to the Rock 11 yard line but fumbled. Lewie Negrotto recovered the ball for SSC.
Andrew Trapani gained seven yards followed by Greer for a gain for 16 yards; however, a bad snap on a punt gave the ball to St. Martin at the Rock two yard line.
The Yellow Jackets needed just one play to score. Mileon Graham scored from two yards with 5:20 left in the half. The PAT missed leaving the score 6-0.
The Rocks (1-2) moved the ball on the ensuing possession. Greer hit Cahill Marlowe for what appeared to be a 56-yard touchdown pass only to be called back for holding. A sack ended the drive two plays later. The half ended with the Yellow Jackets owning a slim 6-0 lead.
The Rocks came out on fire in the second half. Trapani gained 11 yards followed by a 18-yard aerial from Greer to Brewer.
Greer ripped off 11 yards followed by Marlowe's gain of 14 yards.
Two plays later, Marlowe scored from eight yards out with 9:18 left in the third quarter. Beau Rimmer converted on the PAT to make the score 7-6.
The two teams traded possessions before St. Martin reclaimed the lead.
The Yellow Jackets had a 10-play drive that ended with a 20-yard field goal by Sean Gomez with 1:13 left in the third quarter to make the score 9-7.
The two teams traded punts the entire fourth quarter to finish out the game.
In the game, the Rocks were held to just 25 yards rushing. Marlowe led the Rocks with 27 yards on nine carries. Greer threw for 147 yards on 11-for-26 passing. Brewer led the receivers with four receptions for 56 yards while Williams had two catches for 39 yards.
St. Martin totaled 192 yards rushing with Ham McGee leading the way with 144 yards on 17 carries.
On defense, Leo Roos led the way with 13 tackles followed by JD Rutherford, Nick Hava and Lewie Negrotto all with nine stops.
Jordan added, "We need to get back to practice and correct our mistakes and get ready for PRC. It will be good to be at home fir an extended period of time after being on the road for the last three weeks. We were in a position such as this two years ago. We need to play better and do our best to get in a groove."
The Rocks will host Pearl River Central 'between the walls' at the Brother Phillip Memorial Athletic Complex next Friday in their first home game of the 2017 season. The Blue Devils (0-3) were idle Friday night. Game time is set for 7pm.
