The Waveland Board of Aldermen on Tuesday approved the hire of a new city building official.
The board voted 3-1 to hire Josh Hayes, who currently works for the city of Diamondhead.
Ward Three Alderman Shane LaFontaine cast the lone "no" vote.
Hayes will take over a department which has not had a full-time building official since the beginning of the David Garcia administration.
For the past several years, the city has been contracting building inspections and other duties to Carrigee Consulting.
"Building is picking up in the city and the idea was to have a building official here 40 hours a week," Waveland Mayor Mike Smith said Thursday. "This is not about Bill Carrigee. Bill has done a great job and we are going to miss him and his knowledge."
Hayes has spent the past 12 years working for various cities on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
He has achieved certifications in several fields including building and FEMA flood plain.
"We are happy to bring Josh on board," Smith said. "We feel like our building department services will be streamlined for here on."
Carrigee's contract with the city expired at the end of the month.
Hayes is expected to begin once the final employment details are finalized, officials said.
