The 2017 volleyball season has officially tipped off as the academic school year has begun.
This past Saturday, OLA hosted a jamboree that included the Class III state champion Hancock Lady Hawks, Class III state runner-up Oak Grove Lady Warriors and Class III South State semi-finalist Ocean Springs Lady Greyhounds, as well as, the Class I state champion Crescents.
The teams were only allowed to play five sets.
OLA and Hancock squared off against each other twice with each team winning once.
In the first set, Hancock downed OLA 25-19 while OLA rebounded to claim a 25-22 victory on the rebound.
Hancock head coach Rick Rechtien stated, "We had some different lineups we were experimenting with on offense and defense today. Our communication on the court was not as strong as it needs to be. Today was positive for us because we were able to see what we can do and what we need to emphasize."
OLA topped Oak Grove 25-19 but lost to Ocean Springs twice 27-25 and 15-11.
The Lady Hawks fell to Ocean Springs 25-19 but beat Oak Grove twice 25-16 and 15-13.
OLA head coach Mike Meyers commented, "This was a dress rehearsal. I think all the teams experienced some high points and some aspects they need to work on. We did not get the ball to put setter and hitters well today as a whole. When we did, we were successful. This was just the first action of a long season. As long as we improve, we will be just fine."
On Monday, August 7th Hancock (1-0) swept Pass Christian 25-3, 25-4 and 25-11.
Karrington Perkins led Hancock with seven kills followed by Madison Ladner with six and Catie Ladner had five. Madison Ladner also added 15 assists while Amanda Kay Shubert tallied 13. Destiny Hariel recorded five digs.
In upcoming action, Bay High will host Gulfport on Thursday, August 10th and will play in the Pass Christian tournament on Saturday, August 12th. Hancock travels to Madison Central on Thursday, August 10th and will play in the Set It Off tournament on Saturday. OLA will also travel to the Set It Off tournament on Saturday. See you at the games!
