During the ceremony, Garcia praised the city, his family, his friends and his former co-workers for their efforts to help make the city of Waveland a better place, and to rebuild it after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

Mayor Mike Smith and the Waveland Board of Aldermen on Friday honored long-time fire chief and former Mayor David A. Garcia by dedicating the city's Central Fire Station on Hwy. 90 in his honor.
During the ceremony, both Smith and former Hancock County Sheriff Steve Garber praised Garcia for his efforts on behalf of the city and credited him with helping them improve their own lives.
"David set the example not just for me, but for all the firefighters," Garber said. "You serve the community the best you can, with pride and professionalism."
Garcia praised the city, his family, his friends and his former co-workers for their efforts to help make the city of Waveland a better place, and to rebuild it after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.
He said his own success was due to those around him.
"It takes a group of people to be successful and achieve," he said. "It was the people around me who led me and guided me and pointed me in the proper direction. ... I'm very grateful for the people in my life."
