Anyone who's ever attended a New Orleans Saints football game may have caught a glimpse of Sister Who and Sister Dat.
Kathy Markey - who said she prefers to go by Markey and portrays Sister Dat - and her Maltipoo Who-dat recently moved to Bay St. Louis and opened a new pet-friendly business, Bay Area Dog Solutions.
For 25 years, Markey lived in New Orleans where she owned and operated Paws and Claws, she said.
After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Markey attended Animal Behavior College in San Diego, Calif. where she earned her certification.
"I spent the summer at a sanctuary for animals in San Diego," she said. "After Katrina, I volunteered at all the shelters and rescues in New Orleans."
During that time, Markey said, she frequently visited Bay St. Louis to visit her friend and bring her dogs to the beaches.
"I just fell in love in with it," she said.
In 2010, the year the Saints won the Superbowl, Markey said she and her friend Judy Caliva made costumes to resemble a nun's habit, she said. They are black and gold and feature fleur-de-lis symbols, she said.
While Who-dat doesn't attend games, the furry Saints fan can be seen in Championship Square prior to games and walking through the French Quarter during away games, Markey said.
Markey and Caliva will be featured in the soon-to-be released book, "Super Fans," she said, which will feature other well-known "celebrities" who attend games.
In addition to dog training, Markey also offers day and overnight care, dog walking and house sitting.
Markey said she will visit homes to find a solution to a pet's behavior.
"You have a problem, we got a solution," she said. "I specialize in shelter and rescue animals. I teach the dogs to behave so they're more adoptable. Some of the behaviors we don't like in the home are their survival behaviors."
Markey is bonded, insured and a member of Pet Sitter Associates.
Markey said she's always had a passion for animals and always owned them.
"I do more than just teach 'sit' and 'stay'," she said. "I figure out why your dog is so scared or guards their food. Most aren't like Lassie and especially when you get a shelter dog, you don't know their history."
Markey said she plans to reach out to the local animal shelter and offer her services.
