Bay St. Louis Police Chief Daren Freeman has invited the public to the Bay St. Louis Police Department's newest initiative, Coffee with a Cop.
The event will be held on Friday, June 23 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Mockingbird Cafe, located at 110 South Second St. in Bay St. Louis.
Freeman said the goal is to "meet the public in an unbiased location and have a general conversation."
Freeman said the benefits of such an event include:
• Strengthened community policing.
• Increased officer-citizen engagement.
• Developed and strengthened citizen trust.
• Reinforced understanding of officer duties.
• Strengthened citizen trust of officers.
• Enhanced cultural awareness by officers.
"The most important aspect of this event is that our
officers are given the opportunity to positively engage the members of the community in which they serve," Freeman said.
Bay St. Louis Mayor Les Fillingame said Freeman's vision of community policing is "spot on."
"It's what I want it to be," he said. "It's comforting and the community appreciates it."
The Bay St. Louis Police Department is also seeking organizations and/or groups willing to host and sponsor Coffee With a Cop.
