The diamond season has entered it's halfway point and is beginning the downhill run towards the postseason. Area teams grabbed wins last week to help improve their division standings.
The Bay High Tigers jumped out on the East Central Hornets 2-1 early in the game but had some missed opportunities in the field and at the plate that allowed the Hornets the opportunity to take the lead late in the game.
Bay High head coach Kevin Burdine stated, "We had some missed opportunities with runners in scoring position and did not get the timely hit. We also had some mistakes in the field and East Central took advantage of that. They got the timely hit and we did not. Cole Brady did not have his best stuff tonight but he pitched well enough to win. We just did not back him up. But, there is a lot of baseball left to play."
The Tigers (10-5, 2-3) only tallied two hits by Addison Goscinski and Dalton Dore. Tyler Strong and Dore both had RBIs. Brady scattered nine hits and struck out three on the mound.
The Hancock Hawks (3-14, 0-6) dropped their game with Harrison Central on Tuesday 9-0.
Clayton Houchin had two hits while Landon Jordan, Nick Cuevas and Cameron Necaise each had one hit.
The Pass Christian Pirates swept a pair of division games against the Moss Point Tigers this week. On Tuesday, Pass Christian defeated Moss Point 9-0 and later won 7-3 to improve their record to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the division. Game details were not available.
The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws jumped out on the Vancleave Bulldogs early and won the game 9-5.
SSC head coach Mark Logan commented, "We were able to get some hits and runs together and jump out to a big lead on Vancleave early. That allowed us to put some pressure on them. Reagan Corr kept them off balance on the mound and earned the win."
SSC jumped out 5-0 by the second inning and eventually led 9-2 after four innings. Vancleave added three runs in the seventh but were not able to get any closers.
The Rocks (10-5, 4-1) were led by Magruder O'Bannon and Sonny Valentine who tallied three hits each. O'Bannon had two doubles, a single and three RBIs while Valentine added three singles and two RBIs. Nick Hertz had two doubles and Ian Wadsworth and one. Corr improved to 4-0 and had five strikeouts.
In recent softball action, the Hancock Lady Hawks (6-7, 2-0) defeated Biloxi 7-2. Rylee Swilley fanned nine batters and tallied three hits at the plate to lead Hancock. Destiny Harriel and Anna Peterson each had two hits and Brooke Fagan added a double.
Pass Christian defeated Bay High 18-8. Amber Funderburk was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts. Brianna Smith, Brooke Roach, Marley Crawford, Caleigh Ball all had multiple hits and Roach drove in four runs.
In upcoming baseball action, Bay High travels to Perry Central today and hosts Moss Point on Tuesday. Hancock travels to Picayune today for a doubleheader and travels to Biloxi on Tuesday. SSC travels to Hattiesburg today and hosts Pass Christian on Tuesday.
