Tigers & Lady Pirates claim division titles; Lady Pirates & Lady Tigers win first round

The Bay High Tigers and the Pass Christian Lady Pirates both claimed their respective Division 8-4A basketball titles on Friday in Vancleave.
The Tigers (24-5) stopped an upstart Vancleave Bulldogs team 53-42 as they pulled away late in the game.
This was the first division title for head coach Randy McCrory who took over the program in 2013.
Darius Wyman paced Bay High with 18 points followed by Jaylan Wilson with 12 points. Galen Smith III chipped in 10 points and Galen Smith Jr added eight points.
On the girls side, the Pass Christian Lady Pirates wrestled the Division 8-4A title away from the grips of Bay High 45-40 Friday night. The Lady Tigers had won the previous division titles including the last two seasons over Pass Christian.
Pass Christian was behind at half 25-19 but surged ahead in the third period with a 12-0 run.
Bay High, however, committed costly turnovers in the final period that prevented them from closing in on Pass Christian.
The Lady Pirates sank 3-of-4 free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.
Dasha Barnes paced Bay High with 15 points while Jamaya Galloway added 14 points and Amari Pittman added eight. Galloway was named the Division 8-4A MVP.
Maliyah Bullard led Pass Christian with 14 points followed by Daysia Dedeaux with 10 and Cayla Obillo ended the game with eight points.
Pass Christian head coach Greta Ainsworth and Bay High boys head coach Randy McCrory were both named Division 8-4A Coach of the Year.
In the consolation game for the boys, Pass Christian (20-8) advanced to the state playoffs beating Moss Point 56-42.
Tionne Frost led Pass Christian with 12 points while Joshua Lambeth contributed 10 points.
The Lady Pirates (21-10) got a 53-42 win against Lawrence County in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs Monday night.
It was a tight game until midway through the third quarter when Pass Christian claimed the lead for good. In fact, Pass Christian went on a 13-3 run to close out the third quarter.
Obillo paced Pass Christian with 17 points followed by Dedeaux with 10 and Bullard added eight points. Pass Christian will host the winner of West Lauderdale/Sumrall in the second round on Friday.
The Lady Tigers of Bay High claimed a 58-35 win over Richland in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs Monday evening.
The Lady Tigers were led by Pittman withb20 points, including six three-point erst, while Galloway added 17 points and seven rebounds. Barnes added 19 points and nine rebounds.
Bay High will travel to play Northeast Jones in the second round. Northeast Jones defeated Poplarville 55-43 on Monday.
